Artist Statement:
My first love is nature. From an early age, growing up in the Adirondack mountains of New York, I became entranced with the beauty, serenity, and variety that nature has to offer. For me, walking in the woods is about exploration. Even if it is a path I’ve been on many times, I find there are always new things to discover. Painting is about exploration as well. Through my work I discover new ways of expressing my interactions with the world around me.
I am a landscape painter working mostly in oils. I work from life, en plein air, as well as from photo references in the studio. My paintings focus on expressing the beauty of what I see through color relationships and value. I use thick paint and expressive brush strokes to convey the feeling of light that I see as it transforms the landscape around me.
Nature is a place of peace that feels like home to me. My paintings are a place of rest and relaxation for the viewer. A place where you can hear the birds singing and the crickets chirping. Where you can smell the wet leaves and the scent of flowers drifting on the breeze. In this busy, crazy life we all need a place of rest for our souls. My paintings give the viewer an opportunity to stop, take a deep breath, and be present in the moment.
Living and working in Greene County, Virginia gives me many opportunities to explore the beauty of nature in the mountains, fields, and skies all around me. I enjoy using the ever shifting light on the landscape that surrounds me to create beautiful lasting pieces of art.
